"One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child itself." - Maria Montessori

At Carrig Montessori School, children learn, explore, socialize and play in a classroom environment that is tailored to meet their developmental needs. The organization and accessibility of this environment helps students feel confident in their ability to move around the classroom, independently choose work, prepare a snack, or sit with a book in the library corner.

During the Montessori work cycle, children work with and manipulate didactic materials that entice them to actively learn through all of their senses. Students feel a sense of ownership over their discoveries and observations. Teachers, who are carefully trained to observe and meet the unique needs of each child, give individual or small group lessons according to a child's particular interests or ability level.

Circle time, afternoon games, art and movement class are wonderful opportunities for children to learn in a large group setting. These whole-class activities build a sense of community while allowing students to share in one another's talents and contributions.

A special focus on character development is an integral part of any Montessori preschool curriculum. Early on, young children are soaking up the values that will guide them through the rest of their lives. Lessons in grace and courtesy, as well as role modeling by teachers and students alike, help children internalize values of courtesy, respect and responsibility.
